Separating Yarn

I recently started a granny square pattern from Marly Bird under her "one ball wonders" tag, and I treated myself to a nice Caron Cake in preparation. What I didn't pay attention to at the time was that I'd be taking this single ball of yarn and "separating" it - that is, cutting it into pieces! 😂

I think I failed to pick up on a lot of the signs here for a few reasons:

I'm about to start a granny square pattern from Marly Bird under her "one ball wonders" tag. I treated myself to a cute Caron Cake in preparation, but when reviewed the pattern the other day, suddenly found myself confused - in the pattern she says it's a one-ball pattern but that you separate the colors. I'd never heard of separating a ball of yarn before, and had to do a little Googling to make sure it meant what I thought - cutting the yarn cake into separate colors!

Since I've been a crocheter on and off for several decades, I haven't kept up with any new concepts or lingo (let alone old ones)
